Scientists back Vaping

science-backs-vaping

February 8, 2017 | Leave a comment

A new study has confirmed what we’ve known all along, and raised the “95%” safer figure that’s been bandied around to “97%” – that’s right, the science now shows, categorically and without doubt, that that vaping is 97% safer than smoking, and should be fully backed by health professionals. Quick video of the news via ITV below.

What kind of vaper are you?

October 6, 2016 | Comments Off on What kind of vaper are you?

We all knew who we were as smokers, myself I was firmly in the habitual group. I smoked because I smoked, and I liked it. But with vaping comes a new class of social definitions, a new set of archetypes. Are you a Casual Vaper or a Connoisseur? Social snatcher or Cloud Chaser? Now there’s an all new way to find out where you fit. We’ve worked tirelessly to figure out the 10 or so questions that matter the most and created a quiz that’ll take a couple of minutes to complete so you can define who you are. (Only […]

Role of sweet and other flavours in liking and disliking of electronic cigarettes

A lovely bit of research has just been published on the BMJ’s tobacco control section, and one that’s more important then you might think on first glance. Full paper here. Setting out to discover the how important sweetness and other flavours are in the ‘liking or disliking’ of electronic cigarettes this new study has, unsurprisingly, found that flavour has an “important” role of the efficacy of vaping. 31 participants were provided with commercially available flavours and asked to rate whether they liked or disliked them, along with commenting on perceived intensities of sweetness, coolness, bitterness, harshness and specific flavour experienced. The result was, well, expected. Our findings indicate that bitterness and harshness, most […]

Respiratory tissue test: Vapour produces similar result as air

September 7, 2016 | Leave a comment

There’s no question about whether or not smoking is bad for your health. About half of all smokers will die from smoking related illnesses and of these; about half will die by age 50. There’s also very little doubt that e-cigarettes are a much safer alternative to their combustable cousins. But by how much? Public Health England say vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking, yet still we see headlines like “Vaping as bad as fags” adorn the front pages of the UK national press. With those headlines in mind, and the constant echo of “we just don’t know” (when we do); I wanted to follow up our last article with […]

Is vaping as dangerous as smoking?

sunvaping

September 1, 2016 | Leave a comment

No. Let’s be completely clear on this: Vaping is not as dangerous as smoking. 2016 saw a multitude of high profile news publications around electronic cigarettes. Public Health England reported that vaping is ‘at least’ 95% safer than smoking. (source) The National Centre for Smoking Cessation And Training released a briefing for UK Stop Smoking Services that both acknowledges the efficacy of vaping along with recommending it’s use as part of a smokers quit attempt. (source) Public Health England also released clarification for employers making it clear that vaping is not smoking and suggesting that all employers foster “an environment […]

Updated Parliamentary briefing on Electronic Cigarettes

August 10, 2016 | 1 Comment

A mere 24 hours after the US vaping industry heard it’s death knell; the UK government has published an updated Parliamentary briefing known as a POSTnote – and the gulf between UK and US Public Health Policy could not be wider. What are POSTnotes, why are they important? POSTnotes are four page summaries of Public Policy issues. They’re based on reviews of research literature and interviews with stakeholders from across academia, industry, government and the third sector (voluntary/community organisations). They’re also peer reviewed by external experts and their purpose it to allow parliamentarians to easily gain knowledge on key issues. Important stuff then.   So, what does this […]

MHRA publish cross-border permission list

August 3, 2016 | Leave a comment

The MHRA have now published a definitive list of which EU countries have decided to allow cross-border sales. For UK vendors like us, this is now the master list of where we can ship nicotine containing eliquids to, and any EU country that is not on the list below has, sadly, decided that it’s populous should not be permitted to import vaping related products. Out of 28 countries…. 6 will allow cross-border sales (with registration). 8 have yet to declare if they permit or not. 14 are unlisted (cross-border imports are illegal) Yay open borders and the common market. But I […]

So what happened with the Lords “regret” motion and the TPD?

July 6, 2016 | Leave a comment

As I outlined in this news piece, the extremely exciting prospect of a “Fatal Motion” was tabled by Lord Callanan and was due to be spoken about in the House of Lords on Monday July 4th. Well, discussed it was, but not before there were whispers of Shadow Health Secretary Heidi Alexander briefing Labour Lords to vote against it – which led to Lord Callanan reducing his motion to one of “regret”. Still, it was going to be discussed and a motion of Regret in the House of Lords would be powerful so I had to tune in. Thankfully Vapour […]

Public Health England advice for employers and organisations on Vaping in public places

PHE’s ambition is to secure a tobacco-free generation by 2025. We believe e-cigarettes have the potential to make a significant contribution to its achievement. Realising this potential depends on fostering an environment in which e-cigarettes can provide a route out of smoking for England’s eight million smokers, without providing a route into smoking for children or non-smokers. “Use of e-cigarettes in public places and workplaces”, PHE I’ve opened with that quote because 2025 is a mere 9 years away, and whilst health campaigns always seem to have an arbitrary end date plucked out of the air and stuck on them… […]

“6.1 million Europeans have quit smoking with the use of electronic cigarettes”

June 29, 2016 | Leave a comment

Wonderful reslts are in from a new study carried out by Dr. Farsalinos and team. It’s aim? To assess prevalence of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use, reported changes in smoking status due to e-cigarette use and correlates of e-cigarette use in the European Union (EU) member states in 2014. And it’s findings? More than six million smokers in the European Union have quit smoking and more than 9 million have reduced smoking consumption with the use of electronic cigarette. Head over here for the full run down.

E-cigarettes; Miracle or Menace?

May 24, 2016 | Leave a comment

Blink and you could have missed it, but 9pm on Sunday saw BBC2 show an hour long documentary where “Michael Mosley investigates the dramatic rise in e-cigarettes and what ‘vaping’ really does to your health.” Overall I thought it was a hugely beneficial piece. Yes, we had the usual “we just don’t know” comments from one doctor in particular that was determined to present his opinion as fact, and the ‘study’ they carried out comparing quit rates between three groups (cold turkey, NRT, vaping) was also woefully short at 4 weeks, but the message was clear: Vaping can help you get away form cigarettes at least […]

House of Lords motion to annul TPD in UK

May 19, 2016 | Leave a comment

I awake and it’s the 19th of May, in 24 hours time the TPD comes into effect and everything starts to change for vaping – then this popped up on my radar. Lord Callanan to move that a Humble Address be presented to Her Majesty praying that the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, laid before the House on 22 April, be annulled on the grounds that its restrictions on product choice and advertising of vaping devices were devised before evidence had accumulated that vaping was enabling many people to quit smoking, run counter to advice from the Royal College of […]

TPD Update – upcoming changes to European Shipping

May 4, 2016 | Leave a comment

Well, here it is, the bad news no-one has been waiting for. I’ve two things to cover today. Both depressing and I’m sorry to bring this to you on a Wednesday, on any day, but it’s the 4th of May already and I want to give you all as much notice as possible. The headline news is this: 1. The TPD legal challenge has failed. 2. As of May 20th 2016 it will be a criminal offence to ship vaping products from the UK to any other EU country without registration (and of course, registration is impossible). The new EU […]

Bristol Council gets it.

Marvellous read over here, and a huge well done for what is largely nothing more than pretty sensible thinking – very rare sensible thinking. Vaping, as an alternative to smoking, is being encouraged by Bristol City Council this week as they take to the streets hoping to convert people to the tobacco alternative. Bristol Post Yep, Bristol Council will be out suggesting to smokers that they switch as part of a campaign tackling issues caused by carbon monoxide in the body, which is found in cigarettes but not e-cigarettes. Councillor Fi Hance, Assistant Mayor for Neighbourhoods with responsibility for Public Health, […]

It’s here, finally. Not in a particularly exciting way, but aside from the fees we now know what we’re working with in the UK market. Specifics for testing are elsewhere, but this is the preliminary guidance on how to get an e-cigarette on the market in the UK. It’s a fairly short document but it clears up two big question marks that have lingered since the consultation started: The first was over the grandfather date with existing products being allowed to remain on sale through to May 2017. Was that products already on the market, or just stock on hand already […]

Does the EU need us dead?

March 1, 2016 | Leave a comment

Just as we thought we’d won a minor battle in the war that, overall, we’re losing; something comes along to dull the shine on our week. The EU Observer today reports the following…. EU countries are preparing to tax e-cigarettes under the same regime as normal cigarettes, in a move likely to increase prices and to prompt a fight among corporate lobbyists in Brussels. EU Observer But why? It’s the same question we ask again and again: As a healthier alternative to smoking [source] why should vaping attract the same treatment as smoking? Particularly the so called sin taxes. After all; vaping doesn’t stink, cause litter, nor bring […]

Latest Briefing from National Centre for Smoking Cessation And Training

NCSCT

February 24, 2016 | Leave a comment

I had a quick skim through this to start with, and then read with in more detail with joy and a tinge of sadness. Joy because this is what we all know to be true of vaping; no self-aggrandising or grandstanding, just good honest research backed truth. Sadness because we’ve known this to be true all along, and I wonder what type of regulation we’d be subject to had this come out a year or two earlier. But no, the last few years we’ve been subject to certain self-acclaimed health types that kept on with the puritanical rhetoric that vaping sort of looks […]

Don’t share negativity

Life is about perspective. The way we look at the world pretty much dictates how we experience it and, importantly, what we say reflects what we believe. This week the latest psudeo-news being shared everywhere is about a poor guy that’s ended up with a hole in his lung. I don’t know what happened to him (and I hope he recovers soon) but the articles about it lend a great chance for me to write about something I’ve wanted to raise for a while. Literally every vaping group I’m a part of has the article shared as “Vaping Hospitalised Man” or “Vaping […]

Say hello to Flavour Lists

August 25, 2015 | Comments Off on Say hello to Flavour Lists

There are now over 100 flavours on the site spread across 13 brands, way more than I first anticipated bringing over and I’m proud to say that I think we’ve lived up to our ideal of a highly curated selection of liquids from some of the greatest flavour houses in the United States. But 100 flavours makes it hard to keep track of  your favourites or those that sound nice, but you aren’t ready to try just yet. So the idea of giving you all somewhere to keep a list of likes/wants/wishes was born. Flavour Lists are here. Simple enough in idea, […]

“E-cigarette vapour has NO toxic effect and is as safe as AIR, shock study claims”

July 16, 2015 | Comments Off on “E-cigarette vapour has NO toxic effect and is as safe as AIR, shock study claims”

British American Tobacco have just published ‘shock’ results after testing ecig vapour. Yes, it’s big tobacco funded research and yes, I’m sure many in the medical profession will be suspicious, but times have changed in the last few decades and research is much more easily scrutinised than it used to be. Plus, this research aligns quite nicely with the work of Dr Farsalinos in showing the relative safety of vaping vs smoking. Electronic cigarettes pump out vapour which has NO toxic effect on the cells found in human lungs, scientists have claimed. Fresh research funded by British American Tobacco has […]

Where have you stuck your sticker?

July 1, 2015 | Comments Off on Where have you stuck your sticker?

So we’ve started sending out little Spiritus Vapes stickers with orders. The design is one I’m really happy with and always have been since it was first created for us by ‘Design by Notice’. From our Vapefest Flag to our branding, just lovely. Now that we’ve sent out about a few hundred I’ve gotten curious if people are using them and where indeed the stickers are being stuck, so…. From now until the idea runs out of steam; show us where you’ve stuck your sticker and you could win a free bottle of juice. Details below on how to share […]
